This year ASCILITE are conducting a project in collaboration with the SIG leaders called ‘Contextualising the Horizon’.
The annual EDUCAUSE Higher Education Horizon Reports feature “key trends and emerging technologies and practices shaping the future of higher education” (EDUCAUSE, 2021) and over time, these reports have become an important resource for Higher Education sector stakeholders globally.
The preparation and research for this report is conducted through an annual collaborative process involving approximately 50 international expert panelists. For the past three years, Danielle Logan-Fleming (Griffith University) has participated in the process as an international expert panelist, collecting regional (Australasian) sentiment and examples to contribute to the nomination and voting of the emerging Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, Political (STEEP) trends that form the report. The research involved in this process is often challenging, especially as it is important to capture and then represent a regional view when engaging in the nomination, discussion and voting processes.
The Contextualising the Horizon project aims to provide an avenue of discussion between TEL stakeholders, led by the ASCILITE community, in order to contextualise current and new trends impacting our regional educational horizon. This contextualisation will occur annually and will be used to create a publicly available resource that reflects the pertinent trends and key technologies and practices, supported by Australasian examples.
This project has Griffith University ethics approval (GU Ref No: 2021/856).
The following individual SIG sessions are intended for current and potential members to join together to discuss the progress and outcomes in 2021 and plan for 2022 activities. Delegates are welcome to attend one or more of these sessions.

Contextualising the Horizon Session 1

Session 1 will start with a joint online briefing session where the project will be explained and contextualised. Then, in SIG-based online breakout rooms (led by the SIG leaders), attendees will engage in a collaborative activity in which they will identify the current Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, or Political (STEEP) trends in higher education, as they are experiencing them in Australasia. There will be a discussion of the current trends and each breakout group will come up with five trend nominations particular to their assigned STEEP Category.

Contextualising the Horizon Session 2
ConnectPassword: 123456
Session 2 is an online session where each SIG group will review the 25 STEEP trend nominations from Session 1, as a part of a STEEP Analysis activity. Each SIG-based group will be given the opportunity to discuss, provide commentary and contribute examples/evidence on the trend nominations across all of the STEEP categories.
The first half-hour will feature a panel drawn from the SIG Leaders followed by a general discussion. We will then break out into 4 sessions each discussing solutions to one of these challenges and finally, we will all come back together to consider priorities for the ASCILITE community.
The times are still being finalised. Check back here soon.
